Rest stop safety: tips for day and night
Updated October 2026
Rest areas are busy public places, and most stops are uneventful. A few habits make them safer, especially after dark.
Before you pull in
- Stop before you are exhausted. Drowsy driving causes thousands of crashes a year, and a short break or nap helps more than coffee alone.
- If a rest area looks empty and unlit at night, drive on to the next one or to a busy truck stop. Every rest stop page on this site shows the distance to the next stop.
While you are there
- Park close to the building and under lights.
- Lock the car, take valuables with you or keep them out of sight.
- Keep your phone charged and your keys in hand when you walk back.
- If you nap, lock the doors and crack a window only slightly. Follow the state's time limit.
With kids and pets
- Walk children to the restroom; many rest areas have family restrooms.
- Keep dogs leashed and use the pet area if there is one.
In an emergency, call 911. Many rest areas display their location or mile marker on a sign near the building, which helps dispatchers find you.
