Truck parking at rest areas: where the big lots are

Updated October 2026

Truck parking is one of the scarcest resources on US highways. Federal hours-of-service rules require drivers to take breaks, but public rest areas offer far fewer spaces than there are trucks on the road. The Federal Highway Administration counted truck spaces at public rest areas for its Jason's Law truck parking survey; we use those counts on every rest stop page.

The counts come from the survey published in 2019. Some lots have been expanded or closed since, so treat them as a guide, not a guarantee.

When the lot is full

Do not park on ramps or shoulders: it is illegal in most states and dangerous. Look up the next stop in your direction on the rest stop page, or a truck stop at the next exits. Lots usually fill from early evening.

Largest rest area truck lots

The FHWA survey counted 36,554 truck spaces at the 1,764 public rest areas and plazas in our list.
