State welcome centers on interstates

A welcome center is a rest area near a state line, usually run by the state tourism office or DOT, with free maps, brochures and often staff who can help with directions and bookings. Most have the same restrooms, picnic areas and vending machines as other rest areas.

Staffed information desks keep business hours, while restrooms are often open around the clock. Hours vary by state and season, so check the state's own site before you count on the desk being open.

Are welcome centers open 24 hours?

Restrooms at many welcome centers are open around the clock, but the information desk keeps business hours. Arkansas, for example, staffs its welcome centers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (6 p.m. in summer).
